This is, without a doubt, my favorite restaurant in West Bend. In fact, I'm rather surprised to find a restaurant and bar of this quality in West Bend (despite the fact that I, rather sarcastically, call in the culture hub of Washington County). This restaurant rivals those in much larger cities, such as Milwaukee, Minneapolis, or even, dare I say it, Chicago. Many a lovely nights have been spent in the Poplar, sipping the martinis expertly mixed by the bartender/owner (he even hand-stuffs olives with blue cheese for my gin martinis, upon request...I think I'm in love with him), eating the perfectly grilled steaks, and tempting myself with the large assortment of heavenly desserts. My sister and brother-in-law had their rehearsal dinner here and one of the waitresses made two cakes for dessert. Mind you, I am not a cake person - I much prefer brownies, pies, ice creams, etc, but these cakes, THESE CAKES, were the best that I ate and, quite possibly, better than anything I have yet to eat. Do yourself a solid and get yourself to the Poplar. I consider myself the luckiest gal in the world knowing that it's just a hop, skip and a jump down the road from my parent's place. I have stumbled home from the Poplar more than once. And it was the best night of my life every time.

My favorite restaurant in West Bend! This place has a cozy, yet elegant atmosphere with 5 star quality food and equally amazing service!

The best cuts of meat in West Bend. Terrific staff, and a great cocktail menu. Great selection of scotch also! Every time I've had the risotto, it has been cooked perfectly. Only recommendation would be to add a relish plate. I know that's kind of supper-clubish and north-woodsy, but hey - it's Wisconsin! Love the Poplar Inn - it's where I take out of town guests when I want to impress them.

Great place. With the nice small town feel and hospitality along with great steak and even the seafood here was good.

Absolutely fantastic! I went for the Friday fish fry and was wary because another restaurant was terrible the previous Friday. Everything was delicious here! The fresh bread was amazing! I got the sampler platter and the halibut and cod were fantastic. The potato pancake was great, the cole slaw creamy (but not too creamy), and the apple sauce had the perfect amount of cinnamon. Great beer and delicious dessert! I wish it wasn't my last night in Wisconsin because I would be back!

Lovely seating outside. Excellent service from the entire staff. Great menu - especially the small portions if you want to nibble at a few things rather than have an entrée. I was only inside briefly, but I'll definitely try to sit inside next time to get the feel of the building. It was too nice a night to not sit outside this time around.

Great food and great staff. Was in town for work during the week of Valentine's Day but, they were very accommodating to get me in. Started the shrimp and lobster bisque, which was extremely flavorful and had a nice couple chucks of lobster in it. Ordered the filet mignon and brussel sprouts, the steak didn't need a thing added to it and it cut like butter.

Steak Diane and Maple leaf roasted duck. Not a bad stop for West Bend. They do a fair job with the food and presentation. The steak diane was prepared well and cooked to perfection. The sauce with the steak was a bit off and a bit thicker than I like. It was served with green beans. Not bad, but for me asparagus would have been more appropriate. The duck was also prepared well, although it was a touch overcooked. The wild rice that was served with the duck however, was quite dreadful. It was somehow overcooked and al dente "ish" at the same time. It was no bueno. I was also recommended a wine for my steak that didn't quite make sense and was not tannin'd enough to go with my fatty steak. It didn't cleanse my palate appropriately. With all this being said. come check it out because as far as West Bend is concerned this is one of the better restaurants, just know that you will be spending quite a bit for your meal. If I could offer any critique it would be to drop the plates by $3-5 as I feel that the prices might then be more in line with the quality of food being served.

If you are looking for amazing food, a great atmosphere and great staff... this is THE place to go in West Bend! I love everything about the Poplar Inn. The patio is very nice during the nice weather months and the inside is very warm and inviting. Tony and his staff are top notch!

I was impressed with this restaurant. The service was great (thanks, Megan!), the entree was fantastic, and the outdoor patio a plus. It was a pleasant surprise and a rare gem I would definitely frequent again on my travels.

Whenever I am visiting family.. this is the only place to eat in town. The service is excellent and the food is very good. The restaurant is located in a historic building and decorated beautifully. We love the upstairs especially. They once told us they get a lot of diners who drive specifically up from Milwaukee and I believe it. The place is great!

Can't say enough about this place. Went there again last night and my wife had to restrain me from licking the plate clean. Food, waitresses, bartender, all top notch. Can't wait to go back.

I agree with everything Sarah Z. said BUT it's not called the Brown Dog Pub anymore. Not sure what it is now. Same owners though!

It's called the Poplar Inn now, conveiniently located on Poplar St next to the Library. Have to agree with most of the posts that the food is excellent and have never had a bad meal. Once or twice we've come across things that are undercooked or not as we would have liked it and it was always handled without a problem.

A true gem in West Bend. Steaks are superb, wait staff top notch. Atmosphere excellent. Especially enjoyed the upstairs dining room although distance from the kitchen proved a problem when dining there on a particulary cold day - veggies were luke warm.

My husband and I went there a few months ago. We were seated upstairs fairly quickly. Very quaint restaurant. We ordered steaks and they were made just the way we wanted them. Everything was great. We will go back again. Sharon Kind

The Fillet was to die for. It was cooked perfectly. The mashed potatoes that came with it were cold and didn't have much flavor. The salad wasn't much to write about - kind of boring. The happy family dish-I got a whopping 1 scallop, 2 shrimp, and 1 little piece of lobster which was tough. The flavor was good but a little on the sweeter side.

Hey Michael, the fact you said we would honor in my case but didn't is a load of jibborish. It didn't matter if I had 1 person in my party quite frankly, going by what the people who I ASKED IN ADVANCE OVER THE PHONE told me. I already did what I had to, I was told one thing that it didn't matter how many people were in my party at all, and you all did another, on my birthday no less. What a asinine way to run a business, and then to make excuses for it and still blame the victim? No I will never be back and I have been giving your place bad publicity to locals and on my Ozaukee County foodie blog ever since.

Who knew there was such a nice little restaurant in downtown West Bend? The Poplar Inn did a really nice job in taking care of my group the other night with their small town hospitality, good food and cozy ambiance. Located in a historic home dating back to 1858, the Poplar Inn has been a number of things over it's lifetime, but for the past 7 years has been under this ownership and name. The house is really something with the giant rough hewn beams supporting the ceilings, the creaky staircase and overall the old school feel that you just don't find in modern buildings today. Parking was a snap (I got a spot right out front- gotta love small towns) and walked in the front door to be greeted by an affable hostess who told me my party had not yet arrived but that I could sit upstairs at the bar. Upstairs, I found a nice sized bar manned by Tim, bartender extraordinaire, who dd a great job with my dirty martini and my dining companion's Old fashioned. We sat and chatted awhile and learned a little bit about the history of the house and the restaurant. Once seated- we reviewed the menu and the specials of the day. Warm, soft fresh bread and butter were brought to the table (what is it about Wisconsin bread? Always soooo good) and decisions were quickly made. For my appetizer- I went with the tuna tartar which was served with wonton chips and was pretty good. Others at the table had the bacon wrapped scallops which were the crowd favorite. For entrees- we all went with some version of a steak. We were given a small piece of paper that showed how many of eat cut they still had left. The filet were sold out for that night- but there was still plenty (5) of the 16oz NY strip so that was my choice. And like most places in WI, your dinner comes with your choice of soup, salad and side for a very reasonable price . . . .I think my steak was $28! Crazy, right? The food was a little slow to come up but that was the only hiccup of the night. Our server was terrific and she made sure the wine and cocktails were flowing. And those steaks came up perfectly grilled with a choice of toppings from mushrooms, shrimp and onions. Another crazy good thing? Our server asked us if we had a coupon, a Groupon or any other kind of deal. We didn't but that didn't stop her from giving us $5 off of each of our steaks which made it an even better deal. Dinner and drinks for 4 ran only about $230 . . . . .a really great deal for some really good food. Next time I'm in West Bend you can bet I'll be back. And I bet Tim will have my drink just waiting for me . . .cuz that's just the kind of place this is. You aren't a stranger for long!

Spot on service with a attentive hard working staff ! We were treated to a party the other night with a large group of co-workers to the Poplar Inn, On arrival we were shown to the upstairs area and were the bar is located several large groups were dining , it was a bit tight but the staff kept us up to date and seated us as soon as one group left, I take it the one owner behind the bar did his best to do a flair bartender show,Our group was seated after one other large group. next to us the trendy atmosphere was nice mix and live music trio in the bar area was a touch loud but ok, The size of our group we had two wait staff to take orders promptly And the hostess stayed on our group meeting every ones need!, Our food took some time as you could expect due to the large groups and timing but the staff kept us updated and it was fine as we had a while to talk as a group. Our food was brought up and we had to tell the others to START EATING! and not wait for us presentation SPOT ON veggies crisp, I had a melt in your mouth tenderloin a large portion for the price 5 Stars done perfect! The Filet Buttery, rich, and incredibly tender Center Cut Filet with Exquisite Red Wine Sauce. The Misses had Pesto Crusted Atlantic Salmon Atlantic Fillet topped with Basil Pesto and Parmesan Bread Crumbs and then roasted. Served with Tomato Relish, Wild Rice, and Fresh Vegetables,I had a sample again presentation and taste, flavor spot on! Our wait staff apologized for the wait and the spacing of the meals for our large group but with such fabulous flavors how could you be up set! and understanding the small kitchen they were pushing this amount of great food thru the chef deserves the highest of compliments! With so many imitators that try to sell over price fare as farm fresh to table theme restaurants in the mix soon to be flared out or burned out soon. the Poplar Inn has stood the test of time and will see me return and highly, highly recommend to others , Service highly attentive staff! 5 stars, food and presentation 5 stars! What more can you say the building is quaint beautifully detailed turn of the century building with fresh appointments. We did see on our exit the lower dinning room was crowded ,and were wished the greatest of holidays as a staff member opened the door for our exit! We will be back GREAT JOB!

We were in town for the weekend and very hungry but could not find a quality restaurant without a wait. We just happened to arrive at The Poplar Inn at the right time they had a table for us almost immediately. We were a little under dressed but the greeter was kind as ever and didn't mind even though I pointed this out and apologized as we had just pulled into town. The service was exceptional from the moment we walked in and through out our dinner. The food was also prepared perfectly, we said as we were eating it was a very memorable dinner and as the weekend comes to a close we could not top our dinner at The Poplar Inn

Fantastic hidden jewel. Here in the West Bend area on a business trip. Used Yelp to find just the restaurant I was looking for. Environment is great. Food is even better. The service was fantastic. Definitely a solid 5 star establishment.

Great dinner spot in downtown. Loved, loved the building this restaurant is in - reminded me of the colonial buildings seen in movies. Here for a business trip last week and had the onion rings, jaeger schnitzel, and some ravioli. Onion rings looked looked good and were pretty standard in taste. The Jeagar was decent, not the best - would have been better if the cut was a bit thinner. Ravioli was typical - didn't stand out too much. The bread was good - came hot. This typically was sign to come in terms of the rest of the meal - great hot bread followed by decent dishes.... Recommend tourists and out of towners to come for the atmosphere and uniqueness of the building. Food is just okay for the price you pay.

I really was expecting a great experience for the reviews and word of mouth was good. However, my experience was nothing stellar. In fact it was average all the way around and disappointing. We sat downstairs (maybe patio outside and upstairs has a better ambiance) and I ordered a mojito (which was $10) and salmon. My husband ordered the rib eye steak. The salmon was ok...nothing to rave about. The drink was bad. It was overly sweet. A mojito should be crisp tasting and garnished with a sprig of mint. The taste was similar to a pre-mixed margarita drink. Not authentic or fresh at all and for $10 it should be. My husband's rib eye was also good but not great. We did like the bruschetta appetizer though. I will be back and give it another shot. But will dine upstairs or on patio.

Great restaurant, love the ambiance upstairs. We've eaten here several times and have never been disappointed. The Jaeger Schnitzel was dynamite and I seem to remember a squash ravioli that we truly enjoyed, but it may not be on the menu any longer. The Caprice salad was enjoyed by several of the guests who we ate with as well. They also have a decent beer menu and a nice selection of wines. Fantastci place, we will be back.

We had to go back to our home town to get our taxes done, and needed to find a place to eat. We ate here years ago when it was the Courthouse Inn, Tonight we arrived on Thursday at about 5 pm and we one of the few people there. The Hostess at the door greeted us warmly and made us feel comfortable right away. Our waitress was very prompt and friendly. The bacon wrapped scallops were done to perfection, the salsa on top was good but the flavor of the scallops and bacon still showed through. My wife loved the baked potato soup. The chili was not very spicy, but it was good. The fried pita chips in the chili were good but I think corn chips would have tasted better, We both ordered the Jaeger Schnitzel because they description sounded just like the way the old Linden Inn used to make it. We were not disappointed, it was wonderful, just like I remembered it. Overall we really loved the place and will stop back again when we are back in the area again. Since we left town all of the good places are opening up. First they get a Sendiks, a sushi place, the Popular Inn gets really good, next thing I am going to hear is that West Bend will be getting a Penzeys. Then I will I will have to move back.

We went to the Poplar Inn this past Saturday night for a Christmas Dinner outing with two other couples. This was our third time there in the last year. Each time has been a great experience. The food has been outstanding every time with everyone being very happy with their meals. Hardest part in going back is deciding between the really good meal you had last time and something that others really liked. Steaks, seafood, chicken and duck have all been keepers. The bartenders and staff have been very friendly, attentive and just add to an all around good experience. The live entertainment at the upstairs bar provides a good background for conversation. The atmosphere is kind that of a nice old country inn The Poplar Inn has quickly become our favorite place to dine in the area and is well worth our 30 minute drive.

Had the Maple Salmon last night-a special. It was absolutely delicious and the wild rice was excellent. The salad was just average unfortunately but didn't detract from the entree. Everyone at our table loved what they had ordered. Staff was friendly and attentive. I would definitely recommend The Poplar Inn!

This is a must dine at in Washington county their steak is outstanding I had the rib eye with the brandy glaze. The meal starts with a soup or salad I had the soup it was very tasty. The steak was served with the garlic mashed potatoes and fresh veggies which were excellent additions to the meal. The drinks were great as always and a good size. If you have a thought of going downtown Milwaukee skip it save a few dollars and try the Poplar Inn a real gem just outside downtown West Bend. A meal that will not disappoint.

Went there on a date night. Was supposed to be the best. Got in early to have a cocktail went upstairs to the bar sat down and had a couple drinks the wife and I. Then the table was ready in the back corner. no biggie but couldn't fit between the wall and the other couple and then the waitress was a complete bag waited and waited to get an appetizer then to order soup or salad, they dont have baked french onion they have potato ham. Really! So does walmart. Anyway then we order dinner and i got the 40$ steak that was blah and the wife gets salmon not even seared on one side Gross! 100$ for two people not impressed. By the way when the waitress asks you if you want the rolls instead of getting them, that ticked me off. any how service sucked, food ok and drinks from the bar excellent. So i have to say ill never be back to the unpoplar inn.
